Everything you need to set up your charts and start trading with Blue Mac
Recommended Trading Platforms
MetaTrader 4 / 5
The most widely used trading platform for forex and CFDs. Provided free by most brokers. MT4 is ideal for scalping and day trading. MT5 is better for swing and position trading.
Download from your broker's website.
cTrader
Clean, professional platform popular with ECN brokers. Excellent for scalping due to fast execution. Good charting tools with easy MA setup.
→ ctrader.com
Broker Webtrader
Most brokers offer a built-in web-based platform. Functional for basic charting and trading but we recommend using TradingView alongside your broker for analysis.
Check your broker's website.
💡
Our recommendation: Use TradingView for analysis (it's free and the best charting tool available) and your broker's MT4/MT5 platform for placing the actual trades. This combination gives you the best of both worlds.
How to Add the 50 MA and 200 MA
📊
Why these two MAs? The 50 MA shows the medium-term trend and acts as a dynamic entry zone — price pulls back to it in trending markets. The 200 MA shows the long-term trend and is the most watched level by institutional traders worldwide. Together they form the backbone of the Blue Mac system.
On TradingView (Recommended)
1
Open your chart
Go to tradingview.com, search for your instrument (e.g. XAUUSD for Gold, EURUSD for Euro/Dollar) and select your timeframe using the toolbar at the top.
2
Add the 50 MA
Click the Indicators button at the top of the chart (or press / on your keyboard). Search for Moving Average. Click it to add it. Then double-click the MA line that appears → set Length = 50 · Source = Close · Type = Simple (SMA). Change the colour to something visible like yellow or orange.
3
Add the 200 MA
Repeat the same process. Add another Moving Average indicator. This time set Length = 200 · Source = Close · Type = Simple (SMA). Use a different colour — white or light blue works well so you can clearly distinguish it from the 50 MA.
4
Save as a template
Once both MAs are set up, click the Templates button (looks like a layout icon) → Save as Template. Name it "Blue Mac Setup". Now you can apply these MAs to any chart instantly without repeating the setup.
On MT4 / MT5
1
Open a chart
In MT4/MT5 right-click any instrument in the Market Watch panel → Chart Window. Then select your timeframe from the toolbar (M15 = 15 minutes, H1 = 1 hour, H4 = 4 hours, D1 = Daily).
2
Add the 50 MA
Click Insert → Indicators → Trend → Moving Average. Set Period = 50 · Method = Simple · Apply to = Close. Choose a visible colour. Click OK.
3
Add the 200 MA
Repeat: Insert → Indicators → Trend → Moving Average. This time set Period = 200. Use a different colour from the 50 MA so you can clearly tell them apart at a glance.
Trading Session Times
🕐
All times shown in UTC (Universal Time). To find your local equivalent — search "UTC to [your city] time converter" online. South Africa (SAST) is UTC+2 in winter and UTC+2 year-round (no daylight saving).
🇬🇧 London Open PRIME
08:00 – 12:00 UTC · 10:00 – 14:00 SAST
The most important session of the day. Highest volume, strongest directional moves. The first hour (08:00–09:00 UTC) is the best scalp and day trade window. Most major breakouts happen here.
🔥 London/NY Overlap PRIME
13:00 – 16:00 UTC · 15:00 – 18:00 SAST
Peak global liquidity. Both London and New York are active simultaneously. This produces the largest intraday moves of the entire day. The ideal window for day trading and high-quality scalps.
🇺🇸 New York Session
13:00 – 21:00 UTC · 15:00 – 23:00 SAST
Strong session particularly for USD pairs and US indices (US30, NAS100, SPX500). The open (13:00–15:00 UTC) overlaps with London for maximum volatility. Quieter after 17:00 UTC.
🌏 Asian Session
00:00 – 07:00 UTC · 02:00 – 09:00 SAST
Low volume, tight ranges, frequent false breakouts. Avoid scalping and day trading during Asian hours. JPY pairs are slightly more active. Swing and position traders can ignore session times entirely.
🇦🇺 Sydney Session
22:00 – 07:00 UTC · 00:00 – 09:00 SAST
Very low volume for most instruments. AUD and NZD pairs have slightly more activity. Not recommended for Blue Mac strategies — wait for London to open.
🇿🇦 SAST Quick Guide
UTC + 2 hours (year-round)
South Africa does not observe daylight saving. London Open = 10:00 SAST. London/NY Overlap = 15:00 SAST. This means South African traders get the best sessions in the afternoon — ideal for after-work trading.
Economic Calendar & News
⚠️
Checking the calendar before every session is non-negotiable. High-impact news events can move price 50–500 points in seconds, widen spreads dramatically, and stop out perfectly valid setups. This takes 30 seconds to check and saves you from avoidable losses.
📅
ForexFactory Calendar
The gold standard for economic calendars. Free, comprehensive, and colour-coded by impact level. Red = High impact (avoid trading) · Orange = Medium impact · Yellow = Low impact. Set your timezone in the settings for accurate local times.
→ forexfactory.com/calendar
📊
Investing.com Economic Calendar
Clean interface with good filtering options. Useful for filtering by currency (e.g. show only USD events if trading Gold or US30). Has a mobile app for checking on the go.
→ investing.com/economic-calendar
🔴
The High-Impact Events to ALWAYS Avoid
These events regularly move markets 100–500 points and must never be traded through:

NFP — Non-Farm Payrolls (First Friday of every month, 13:30 UTC)
CPI — Consumer Price Index / Inflation data
FOMC — Federal Reserve meetings and rate decisions
Interest Rate Decisions — Any central bank (ECB, BOE, RBA, etc.)
GDP — Gross Domestic Product releases
✅
The 30-Minute Rule
For scalp and day trading — do not open a new trade within 30 minutes before OR after a high-impact news event. The 30 minutes before = spreads widen and liquidity dries up. The 30 minutes after = volatility spikes unpredictably. Wait for the dust to settle and a clean structure to form before looking for your entry.

Price Position vs MAs
MA
On your chart you will see two curved lines following price. The 50 MA (faster, closer to price) and the 200 MA (slower, further away). Where price sits relative to these lines tells you the trend direction.
50 MA 200 MA Price ✓ ABOVE BOTH = BULL
Bullish
50 MA 200 MA ✓ BELOW BOTH = BEAR
Bearish
💡
The rule: Only take long (buy) trades when price is above both MAs. Only take short (sell) trades when price is below both MAs. Between the MAs = no trade zone.
📐
MA Stack — 50 vs 200
MA
The MA Stack tells you whether the trend is confirmed. When the 50 MA is above the 200 MA, buyers are in control. When the 50 MA is below the 200 MA, sellers are in control.
50 MA 200 MA BULLISH STACK ✓
50 above 200
200 MA 50 MA BEARISH STACK ✓
50 below 200
💡
The rule: Bullish stack = 50 MA above 200 MA → look for longs. Bearish stack = 50 MA below 200 MA → look for shorts. Tangled MAs = no clear trend → wait.
🎯
The 50 MA Pullback Entry
MA · ENTRY
The 50 MA acts like a magnet. In an uptrend, price moves up, pulls back down to the 50 MA, then bounces up again — that pullback is your buy zone. In a downtrend, price falls, rallies up to the 50 MA, then rejects — that rally is your sell zone.
50 MA ENTRY BULL PULLBACK ENTRY ✓
Buy the pullback
50 MA ENTRY BEAR RALLY ENTRY ✓
Sell the rally
⚠️
If price is already far from the 50 MA — the entry has passed. Do not chase. Wait for price to pull back to the 50 MA before entering. Chasing extended moves is the most common trading mistake.
🏔
Swing High & Swing Low
STRUCTURE
A Swing High is a candle whose high is higher than both the candle before it and after it — a visible peak. A Swing Low is a candle whose low is lower than both neighbours — a visible trough. These define where the market has turned.
SWING HIGH SWING LOW
💡
How to find them: Zoom out your chart. Look for obvious peaks (swing highs) and obvious troughs (swing lows). The most recent ones are the most important. Your SL for longs goes just below the most recent swing low. SL for shorts goes just above the most recent swing high.
📈
Market Structure — HH/HL vs LL/LH
STRUCTURE
Markets move in waves. An uptrend makes Higher Highs (HH) and Higher Lows (HL) — each peak and each trough is higher than the last. A downtrend makes Lower Lows (LL) and Lower Highs (LH).
HL HL HH HH HH UPTREND — LOOK FOR LONGS
HH / HL
LH LH LL LL LL DOWNTREND — LOOK FOR SHORTS
LL / LH
💡
The rule: Never fight the structure. If the market is making HH/HL, only look for long setups. If it's making LL/LH, only look for short setups. Structure breaks when a swing low is broken in an uptrend — that's your warning sign.
🎯
Support & Resistance
LEVELS
Support is a price below current price where the market has previously bounced up — the floor. Resistance is a price above current price where the market has previously turned down — the ceiling. The more times price has reacted at a level, the stronger it is.
RESISTANCE SUPPORT
💡
How to find key levels: Zoom out your chart 3–6 months. Look for horizontal zones where price reversed multiple times, had long wicks, or stalled. Previous day/week highs and lows, and round numbers are always key levels.
🕯️
Bullish Candlestick Signals
CANDLES
These are the most powerful bullish reversal signals. They are most significant when they form at a key support level or the 50 MA. Always wait for the candle to fully close before acting on it.
Bullish
Engulfing
Pin Bar /
Hammer
Momentum
Candle
Inside Bar
Breakout
⚠️
Critical rule: Only act on a fully closed candle. A candle still forming can look like a pin bar and then close as a doji. The signal is only confirmed when the candle is complete and locked in.
🕯️
Bearish Candlestick Signals
CANDLES
These are the most powerful bearish reversal signals. They carry the most weight when forming at a key resistance level or the 50 MA in a downtrend. The shooting star and bearish engulfing are the two most reliable short signals.
Bearish
Engulfing
Shooting
Star
Momentum
Bear
Doji —
Indecision
💡
Context is everything: A shooting star at a strong resistance level after a big upward move = high probability short. The same candle in the middle of a range = meaningless. Always ask — where is this candle forming?
🕯️
Tweezer Top & Tweezer Bottom
CANDLES
Two consecutive candles that reach the exact same high (Tweezer Top) or exact same low (Tweezer Bottom). This shows price tried to break a level twice and was rejected both times — strong double rejection signal.
SAME HIGH TWEEZER TOP ↓
Bearish
Reversal
SAME LOW TWEEZER BTM ↑
Bullish
Reversal
💡
The signal: Price tested a level twice and was rejected both times — institutions are defending that level hard. Most powerful when forming at a key support/resistance zone or the 50 MA. The second candle closing in the opposite direction confirms the reversal.
⭐
Morning Star & Evening Star
CANDLES
Three-candle reversal patterns. The Morning Star forms at the bottom of a downtrend — big red → small doji/indecision → big green. The Evening Star forms at the top of an uptrend — big green → small doji → big red. The middle candle is the "star".
★ STAR MORNING STAR ↑
Bullish
Reversal
★ STAR EVENING STAR ↓
Bearish
Reversal
💡
The key: The middle "star" candle shows the market pausing and losing conviction. The third candle confirms the reversal with a strong close in the new direction. Most powerful on Daily and Weekly timeframes at key levels.
🕯️
Hanging Man & Inverted Hammer
CANDLES
These look similar to the hammer and shooting star but context is everything. A Hanging Man looks like a hammer but forms at the TOP of an uptrend — warning of a bearish reversal. An Inverted Hammer has a long upper wick but forms at the BOTTOM — potential bullish reversal.
AT TOP HANGING MAN ↓
Bear Warning
at uptrend top
AT BTM INV. HAMMER ↑
Bull Warning
at downtrend bottom
⚠️
Context makes the candle: The same shape means opposite things depending on WHERE it forms. A hammer at the bottom of a downtrend = bullish. The same shape at the top of an uptrend (Hanging Man) = bearish warning. Always read the candle in context of where it formed.
🚩
Bullish Flag & Bearish Flag
CONTINUATION
A Flag is a continuation pattern — a brief, tight pause after a strong directional move, before the trend continues. Bullish Flag: strong push up → tight sideways/slight downward channel → breakout up. Bearish Flag: strong push down → tight upward channel → breakout down.
BULL FLAG ↑
Continuation
Long
BEAR FLAG ↓
Continuation
Short
💡
Entry timing: Wait for the breakout of the flag channel with a strong candle close. The entry is on the breakout candle close — not inside the flag. The flagpole height gives you an approximate target for how far the breakout move will travel.
⚔️
Three White Soldiers & Three Black Crows
CANDLES
Three White Soldiers — three consecutive large green candles each closing near their high. Signals powerful sustained buying. Three Black Crows — three consecutive large red candles each closing near their low. Signals powerful sustained selling. Institutions are committed.
3 WHITE SOLDIERS ↑
Strong Bull
Momentum
3 BLACK CROWS ↓
Strong Bear
Momentum
💡
What it means: Three consecutive strong candles = institutions have made a directional decision and are committed. The pattern is most powerful when it breaks out of a consolidation zone or forms after a long ranging period. Each candle should open inside the prior candle's body and close near its extreme.
🌀
Spinning Top — Equal Indecision
CANDLES
A small body with equal upper and lower wicks. Bulls and bears fought hard but neither won — the candle closed roughly where it opened. Signals pure indecision. Similar to a doji but with a slightly larger body.
SPINNING TOP = INDECISION
⚠ HERE ? WAIT FOR NEXT CANDLE
⚠️
What to do: A spinning top at a key level after a strong trend move = potential reversal warning. Do NOT enter on the spinning top itself. Wait for the next candle to close and show you the direction. The spinning top is a warning, not a signal.
🪦
Gravestone Doji & Dragonfly Doji
CANDLES
Special doji variations with extreme wicks. Gravestone Doji — long upper wick, no lower wick, closes at the open (at the bottom) — strong bearish rejection at a resistance level. Dragonfly Doji — long lower wick, no upper wick — strong bullish rejection at a support level.
LONG UPPER NO LOWER GRAVESTONE ↓
Bearish —
at resistance
LONG LOWER NO UPPER DRAGONFLY ↑
Bullish —
at support
💡
Why these are powerful: The Gravestone shows price rallied hard during the session but was completely rejected and closed back at the open — sellers completely overwhelmed buyers. The Dragonfly shows the opposite. Both are stronger signals than a regular doji because the rejection was total.
💪
Marubozu — Pure Conviction
CANDLES
A Marubozu is a candle with no wicks at all — it opened at one extreme and closed at the other. This is the most decisive candle that exists. Bullish Marubozu: opened at the low, closed at the high — buyers were in complete control the entire session. Bearish Marubozu: opposite.
CLOSE OPEN BULL MARUBOZU
No wicks
Pure buying
OPEN CLOSE BEAR MARUBOZU
No wicks
Pure selling
💡
What it means: A Marubozu is institutional conviction — no hesitation, no pullback during the entire session. When you see this on a breakout of a key level, it confirms institutions have committed. The lack of wicks means there was no opposing pressure at all.
🤱
Harami — Momentum Pause
CANDLES
A Harami (Japanese for "pregnant") is a large candle followed by a small candle that fits completely within the large candle's body. Unlike an inside bar (which uses the full range), the Harami only requires the bodies to be inside. Signals a potential momentum slowdown.
BULL HARAMI ↑
Bullish
after downtrend
BEAR HARAMI ↓
Bearish
after uptrend
⚠️
How to trade it: A harami is not a strong standalone signal — it is a warning that momentum is slowing. Wait for the candle after the harami to confirm direction before entering. A harami followed by a pin bar or engulfing in the opposite direction is a high-probability reversal setup.
🌊
Push Count — Wave Exhaustion
STRUCTURE
Markets move in waves. Each directional move from a key level is called a "push". The 1st push has the most runway. By the 3rd push, the market is exhausted — most retail traders enter here and get trapped by the reversal.
KEY LEVEL 1st MAX 2nd OK 3rd ⚠ EXT. RETAIL TRAP →
⚠️
The trap: Most retail traders enter on the 3rd push because "the trend is obvious". This is exactly when institutions are distributing (selling into strength). If price has made 3+ pushes — wait for a pullback to a key level before entering.
🕐
Trading Session Times (SAST)
SESSIONS
For scalp and day trading, the session you trade in matters enormously. London and New York have volume and momentum. The Asian session is low volume and produces false signals — avoid it for short-term trading.

💡
South African traders: SA doesn't change its clocks, but Europe and the US do — so London and New York shift by an hour during the year. Your prime windows are the London open and the London/NY overlap. Working office hours? The New York session runs until 22:00–23:00 SAST, which still gives you evening setups.
📏
MAs Spreading vs Tangled
MA
When the 50 MA and 200 MA are spreading apart like a V opening up — the trend has real momentum behind it. When they are running parallel — trend confirmed but not accelerating. When they are tangled and crossing — the market is choppy, avoid trading.
SPREADING ✓
Strong trend
PARALLEL
Trend intact
TANGLED ⚠
No trade
💡
The rule: Spreading MAs = enter with confidence. Parallel MAs = enter but stay alert. Tangled MAs = stand aside completely. Tangled MAs mean the market has no direction and you will take losses trading them.
